The Challenges of Deploying an Innovative Covering System

Discover the exciting story behind the development of our flagship product, the LiteCover®, through an original comic strip!

In 1995, with the emergence of mandatory covering for transportation, waste and material haulers were desperately seeking a solution to cover their containers and roll-off bins.
Being in the textile sector and close to our clients, the idea of using micromesh nets on containers marked the beginning of OTEXIO’s specialization (then known as CORDERIE VINCENT) in textile solutions for waste transport.
As the need for a secure covering system became urgent and essential for our clients, we naturally relied on our expertise in technical textiles and our responsive, field-focused team.

Follow the steps of its design and the obstacles encountered in the field that pushed us to repeatedly question ourselves in order to find the right solutions.

Technical Deployment and Ergonomics

The initial idea was to invent a system that was fixed to the container and could be unrolled from the ground. Welded directly onto the container, the system immediately confronted our development teams with major problems that significantly impacted drivers: weight, bulkiness, delivery transport, and limited versatility.

Very quickly, the installation difficulty, the high cost, and the obvious lack of flexibility in use forced us to rethink our approach. Not to mention, the main goal of this system was to avoid climbing on the container... and clearly, installation was risky!

Faced with these challenges, we redesigned the system to focus our technical development on reducing weight, enabling easy assembly/disassembly, and making it easy to transport, to better meet real-world constraints and offer an improved user experience.

System Safety and Versatility

Initially, a magnet-based system not fixed directly to the container was introduced to simplify its use. However, despite this approach, the system proved to be heavy and complicated to handle.

This complexity led to difficult installation, limited user adoption, and a frequent need for maintenance, which called into question its field effectiveness.

To address these issues, we undertook a redesign to simplify the system, making it operable by a single person from the ground. This evolution also helped reduce musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) related to handling, while ensuring daily safety and versatility.

Training and Support

Initially, handling the net and pole required specific training, which was a major barrier to adoption.

The identified failure stemmed from low driver adoption, often due to a lack of clear communication from team managers.

To remedy this, we implemented targeted training accompanied by regular refreshers, while involving managers more upstream to ensure better communication and collective commitment to the learning process.

Commercial Deployment and Customer Proximity
Commercial Deployment and Customer Proximity

Although our product was perfectly designed, it initially suffered from insufficient promotion, due to a lack of effective communication and suitable sales channels.

This led to commercial difficulties and encouraged the emergence of counterfeits by some competitors.

To address this, we strengthened training for our sales teams, developed closer ties with the field, and filed a patent to protect our innovation and ensure its quality.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement
Innovation and Continuous Improvement

At first, the net suffered from rapid wear, while the pole was fragile, limiting durability and user satisfaction.

To address these issues, we conducted in-depth research on specific materials, such as PEHR to enhance the net's resistance, and lightened the pole using aluminum, thus improving robustness while making handling easier.
