COVERLINE® tunnel, double-sided - high roof height 14m

We visited our customer DBS Recyclage in the Ain region of France to help them solve a problem that is now commonplace for our Otex'perts: how to gain outdoor storage space without height constraints?

Founded in 1989 under the name Dépôts Bennes Services, DBS Recyclage specialises in waste collection, recycling and recovery, as well as skip hire. On behalf of its LBTP branch based at Replonges in the Ain department, we were consulted about the development of its 35,000 m waste transit platform.

A number of constraints came together on the project, making it difficult to find the ideal solution: height under the roof for machine handling, strength and ventilation.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

The platform's daily routine is punctuated by the loading and unloading of waste skips in a central cell measuring 20 m x 25 m. These operations are carried out using a grapple shovel, the arm of which can reach heights of up to 13 m when in use.  On average, around thirty skips are emptied and filled every day, and the lorry sweep must be skilfully organised.

These impressive figures give rise to major logistical and safety constraints: optimising the emptying and filling of its skips by machine, working at height, traffic on the site and preservation of the material.

Our customer was therefore looking for a solution that would enable it to combine all the answers and make its sorting center more functional and safer for its operators, while protecting the stored waste from the vagaries of the weather. The metal-textile structure seemed to be the way forward, but they still had to find the format that would withstand the constraints of the site, its topology and meteorology, while ensuring optimal management of the activity.

THE SOLUTION PROPOSED BY OUR OTEXIO TEAM

As with every project we take on, our technical sales staff visit the site to find out about it, understand the customer's issues and challenges, and consider all the variables required to draw up functional technical specifications and an appropriate budget proposal. Our design office analyses the constraints and data involved (type of material stored, soil conditions, wind rose, sizing, sealing, etc.) to deliver a key solution, tailored to the needs of the site.

In this case, it was our COVERLINE® tunnel, double-sided that fully met the customer's requirements. This metal-textile roofing system with straight legs makes it possible, first and foremost, to store waste sheltered from water and wind. These buildings are designed to withstand harsh climatic conditions and can be adapted to the storage needs of all types of waste and materials: wood, CIW, plaster, organic matter, etc.

This solution also proved ideal thanks to its versatility and adaptability: we were able to adapt the tunnel to the site in terms of length and width (exceptional dimensions of 20m wide x 25m deep) but also, and above all, height: almost 14m high! This height under the roof was made possible by the tunnel's straight legs, which leave an unobstructed space even close to the arches - each 5m apart.

The major challenge of this project was the construction of the alveolus in the center of the site. Nearly 400 blocks were cast on site using specially sized concrete molds. A real logistical challenge was involved, from lorry-loading to drying and installation, but it was the solution chosen by OTEXIO and LBTP for this project that allowed the alveolus to be built flexibly, reducing the carbon footprint that would have been created by transporting all the blocks, and at the same time minimising the overall budget.

An external design office carried out a study for the foundations.

Ground pressure (excluding stored materials) is 15 tons per square metre. To compensate for the pull-out forces and ensure that the blocks held together, around fifty connections were made using 5.80 m long steel bars inside the blocks. The connecting rods were embedded in the concrete foundations. This exclusive system avoids the need to build a double-thickness wall (160cm), which would be much more restrictive and more expensive.

The real advantage of this system is that it can be dismantled and moved, without blocking the development and growth of the site. Its design, open on both sides, allows natural ventilation of the tunnel and improved air circulation.

From a maintenance and upkeep point of view, the system is designed using strips of 670g coated PVC waterproof tarpaulin. This makes it easy to replace and maintain: you can replace just one strip of tarpaulin rather than the whole tarpaulin if it is damaged, saving time and money.

WHAT THE CUSTOMER SAID :

The promise was kept: 100% of the alveolus space can be used, with the grapple and in complete safety: there is no obstruction or fear of snatching the equipment.
The space under the roof is ideal. Tippers can be unloaded while others are filled, and the tunnel fits perfectly into the geometry of the site.

The material is preserved because it is sheltered from bad weather, and the site can therefore operate at full capacity.
